Strengthening Provincial Assemblies in Pakistan
In seeking to develop a holistic approach to improve the capacity and effectiveness of the WPCs, SUBAI- Pakistan conducted a series of Provincial Roadshows (Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) with the overall goal of identifying challenges faced by the individual Provincial WPCs; share best practices, and provide a platform enhanced skills development.
Women’s political participation is not simply about increasing their numbers but it is also about enhancing effectiveness and impact. Women should be able to participate in open, transparent and accountable decision making as ‘agents of change’. SUBAI plans to materialize this through capacity building and training of the cross-party Women’s Parliamentary Caucuses within the Assemblies. For this purpose, SUBAI organized a Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) Roadshow in Balochistan in October 2017.
SUBAI has been asked to provide support to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly who having examined the National Assembly Strategic Plan were keen to replicate a similar plan in the Assembly.
SUBAI has built strong links with the Punjab Provincial Assembly Human Rights & Minority Affairs Committee & the Human Rights Caucus. In October 2017 the Committee & Caucus held a roundtable to discuss the proposed Sikh Marriage Bill.
SUBAI particularly encourages thematic and participatory inter-assembly events which have the added-value of facilitating the building of linkages between Assemblies and provide a platform for peer to peer exchanges and sharing of ideas.
